Samsung's Upcoming Foldable Phones May Feature Water Resistance
Samsung’s Galaxy Z Flip 2 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 may feature water and dust resistance when the company launches these products later this year. But, are these features justifying the price?
The Galaxy Z Flip 2 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 are the upcoming foldable phones from Samsung. These forthcoming foldable phones are rumored to feature an IP rating that may result in some level of water resistance. It is a fact that this foldable product lineup has never been rated for water and dust resistance despite its high price. If we trust the latest rumor, then the foldable segment will enjoy a feature often available with traditional smartphones.
An Ingress Protection, also known as IP, is considered the rating that measures how tightly a device is measured against water, other intrusive elements, and dust. For example, most smartphones come with the IP67 rating indicating that it offers complete protection against foreign particles and dust. Plus, it protects your phone even if it suddenly slips from your hand and is immersed below 1 meter in deep water for up to 30 minutes.
However, it necessarily does not mean waterproof or dustproof. It only measures resistance. Still, IP rating is the most common feature in most of the available smartphones. Therefore, it’s expected that Samsung would also introduce the new smartphones with an IP rating.
Here, it is worth noting that the IP rating feature has been missing from the entire lineup of foldable phones and not only from Samsung’s phones. According to a blog post on SamMobile, the upcoming Galaxy Z Flip 2 and Galaxy Z Fold 3 will be introduced with an IP rating. However, it is not clear from the reports what IP rating the foldable phone will get, but it seems the rating maybe near the level offered with the Galaxy S21 Ultra, i.e., IP68. However, it is not confirmed news still; if it happens, then it is a welcomed addition to the foldable phone lineup.
Foldable Phones: Are They Getting An IP Rating Finally?
Samsung introduced the first Galaxy Fold back in the year 2019. It was the year when the foldable segment with the phones just began. To date, many manufacturers have released their foldable phone lineup. Although introduced with different designs and styles, all these have additional hinges and moving parts with enhanced water and dust intrusion potential.
While these can make it difficult for these foldable phones to get an IP rating, still, the market has come long enough and felt that some progress is due in this department. The manufacturer of foldable phones and companies may justify their stand to increase the prices of foldable phones with IP ratings. For example, initially, the Galaxy Z Fold was launched at $ 2,000; however, its prices reduced later and came down to $1800.
Regarding foldable phones, several issues have been raised about their durability. For example, many questions were raised about the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 2 when it was introduced. When the companies presented their foldable phones with some enhanced degree of durability and protection, it reassured their buyers of what they are purchasing. It will help the company differentiate its Galaxy Flip and Fold phones from other foldable phones when it comes to Samsung.
